Course Introduction

In 2020, the Government of India undertook an extensive reform of the Criminal Justice System. On 11th August 2023, three landmark legislations—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023—were introduced to replace the Indian Penal Code (1860), the Code of Criminal Procedure (1973), and the Indian Evidence Act (1872). These laws came into force on 1st July 2024.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita marks a transformative shift in India’s approach to criminal law. This recorded course provides an in-depth understanding of the structure, essential provisions, and contemporary relevance of the BNS.

About the Course Instructor

Vishalakshi Sathianathan

Ms. Sathianathan completed her five-year law programme from ILS Law College, Pune (2013) and her LL.M. in Criminal Law and Administration with distinction from Central India College, Nagpur University (2015). With over nine years of teaching experience, she is UGC-NET qualified and has previously served as:

• Visiting Faculty at Central India College, Nagpur and TMC Law College, Thane
• Head of Department (Law), KES Shri Jayantilal H. Patel Law College, Mumbai
• Assistant Professor (2018 onwards)

She has chaired academic sessions and panel discussions on subjects such as gender inclusivity and police science. Her ongoing Ph.D. research focuses on the status of mentally ill individuals within the criminal justice system.
