Course introduction:

In 2020,  the Government of India embarked on an ambitious exercise of reforming the Criminal Justice System. On 11th August 2023, three bills titled Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 seeking to repeal and replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA), 1872 respectively, were introduced in the Parliament. These laws came into force on 1st July, 2024. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita represents a paradigm shift in India's approach to criminal law, aiming to make justice delivery more effective, efficient, and aligned with the needs of contemporary society. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the BNS, its structure, key provisions, and its significance in India's criminal justice framework.

 

About the course instructor:

Vishalakshi Sathianathan

Faculty and Mentor, LiveLaw Academy

Ms. Sathianathan has completed her five-year law course from ILS Law College, Pune in 2013 followed by an LLM in Criminal Law and Administration with distinction from Central India College, Nagpur University in 2015. She has over nine years of teaching experience and qualified UGC NET. She has been a visiting faculty at Central India College, Nagpur and TMC Law College, Thane. Preceding her position at LiveLaw, she was the Head of Department (Law) at KES Shri. Jayantilal H. Patel Law College, Mumbai from 2022 onwards and has been an Assistant Professor at the same organization since 2018.  She has been called upon to chair sessions and as a panelist by various institutions on topics ranging from gender inclusivity to police science. Her area of research centers around the status of mentally ill in the criminal justice system and she is pursuing a Ph.D. on this subject.

Course Objectives:

  • The course will be divided into 60+ classes of 2 hours each. 
  • The total course duration will be 125+ Hours
  • Five classes will be taught per week from Monday to Friday.
  • Sometime will be kept aside in each class for clearing doubts. 
  • A WhatsApp group shall also be set up of all the participants, to facilitate exchange of ideas and clearance of doubts on an ongoing basis. 
  • On successful completion of the course, a certificate will be issued to the students. 
  • To familiarise the participants with important nuances of the New Penal Code i.e. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.
  • The course will be theoretically rich as well as practically relevant, supported with Landmark Judgements and Recent Developments. 
  • Analyze key changes and their implications for law enforcement and the judiciary.
  • Understand the newly introduced offences in detail added in the BNS.
  • Gain practical insights into its application in real-world scenarios.

Yes, the recordings will be accessible on the course portal for a period of six months.
